PROBLEMS FOR WALLABIES
Threats to wallabies include :
- Dog attack
- Traffic mortality
- Habitat loss and fragmentation
|
Dog attacks can cause death, injury and female
wallabies to eject their young from the pouch.
| Stop dogs from roaming freely, particularly
where they can form packs. Keep dogs confined at night
when the wallabies are most active. |
Roads can act as a barrier to wallaby movement.
The more traffic that uses a road, the greater the risk of road
kills for wallabies. Practical measures that can be taken to assist
wallabies crossing roads include indentifying and protecting crossing
points, warning signs and seasonal speed control.
Weeds such as lantana degrade the natural bushland,
leading to the local extinction of native plants and should be
removed.
| The dumping of garden and lawn clippings
contributes to weed growth which smothers native plants. |
